Description
Musculoskeletal complications in diabetes are often under-recognized and underrated despite the fact that they impact overall quality of life, mobility, and long-term health outcomes. Much attention is given to the cardiovascular and microvascular complications, both in the curriculum as well as practice. Common musculoskeletal issues like frozen shoulder, cheiroarthropathy, compartment syndromes, and tenosynovitis are often ignored by physicians, which, if identified early, can be very well managed. The book bridges the gap between diabetes and musculoskeletal health, as the various issues have been extensively dealt with by the renowned diabetologists and rheumatologists in our country. The book extensively covers various complications, individually summarizing their clinical features as well as their differential diagnosis. The underlying mechanisms of these complications have been well elucidated. Both pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions for these problems have been highlighted. Chronic health issues like osteoarthritis and osteoporosis have also received space, and their bidirectional link with diabetes has been explained by the authors. Pathophysiological impact of diabetic neuropathy on musculoskeletal health, leading to various deformities, has also been discussed. In a nutshell, this is our sincere effort to sensitize practitioners to various rheumatological complications of diabetes and thus provide holistic care to patients to improve their quality of life.
